The 67th Grammy Awards ceremony had many viewers in shock as to what went down during the show. The ceremony had many celebrities in attendance like Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Will Smith, and Bruno Mars. The show was also dedicated to raise funds for the MusiCares Fire Relief, which is a campaign that supports people who have been affected by the wildfires in Los Angeles. The folk band Dawes opened the ceremony with an inspiring rendition of singer Randy Newman’s I Love L.A. joined by other famous musicians like John Legend, Sheryl Crow, Brad Paisley, St. Vincent, and Brittany Howard to honor the people who are suffering from the wildfires. Another performance that was for the people that were affected by the wildfires were Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga’s duet where they sang California Dreamin by the Mamas and the Papas. The awards show had many surprised winners, great performances, moving speeches, and even some uninvited appearances.
The most shocking event that happened was way before the ceremony; it was during the red carpet when the rapper Kanye West and his wife Bianca Censori arrived without an invitation. While walking the carpet, Censori removed her huge furry coat to reveal her fully see through dress which left her completely nude. Many speculate that the pair were kicked out before they could get into the venue, but the Grammys reported that this statement was false and that they just got in West’s car after walking the carpet. Even though they weren’t seen at the ceremony, that didn’t stop the two from attending Grammys after party and pulling the attention to them.
The popstar Chappel Roan had a huge night with her big performance of her hit song Pink Pony Club. She was also nominated for Best New Artist and won the award. During her acceptance speech, Roan called out record labels and held them accountable for supporting their artists. She mentions how record labels should offer artists healthcare and livable wage, especially if they are new artists trying to reach fame. While the audience broke out in applause, Roan connects this to her own story.
“I got signed so young, I got signed as a minor. When I got dropped, I had zero job experience under my belt, and like most people, I had … quite a difficult time finding a job in the pandemic and [could not] afford insurance. It was devastating to feel so committed to my art and feel so betrayed by the system and dehumanized. If my label had prioritized it, I could have provided care for a company I was giving everything to. Record labels need to treat their artists as valuable employees with a livable wage and health insurance and protection,” said Roan.
The singer The Weekend ended his Grammys boycott at the show with a surprise performance singing Timeless with the rapper Playboi Carti and Cry for Me. Back in 2021 when The Weekends hit album After Hours received no Grammy nominations from the Academy, he began his boycott. This year the CEO of the Grammys, Havery Mason Jr., was reflecting back to when he found out the news that The Weekend was going to start boycotting the Grammys and when he mentioned that the awards lacked transparency. Mason then mentioned how they have now tried to create diversity in their voters and nominees; then Mason introduced The Weekend to the stage where The Weekend started his performance.
Many country music fans were disappointed with the winner of the Country Music Album of the Year. Despite long time country music stars Chris Stapleton, Lainey Wilson, as well as Kacey Musgraves and Post Malone all being nominated for Country Album of the Year, Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter Album won. Beyonce, a long time pop star has won the most Grammys in history, being nominated for 99, and winning 35. She released her first ever country album in 2024, Cowboy Carter, with collaborations with many other singers like Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Miley Cyrus, Shaboozey and many more, which most likely boosted the popularity of her album. Popular songs on this album include TEXAS HOLD ‘EM and 16 CARRIAGES, which blew up radio stations and popular social media platform Tik Tok. Also on Tik Tok, are the many opinions of country music fans on this Grammy award. Many fans are disappointed that Beyonce won and would much rather have seen a true country artist, such as Stapleton or Wilson win for their albums Higher and Whirlwind.
