Musician Cat Janice, who went viral on TikTok for dedicating her last song to her son, passed away on February 28th, 2023 after spending her final days in hospice suffering from Sarcoma Cancer.
Her family released a statement on Instagram shortly after her death:
“We are eternally thankful for the outpouring of love that Catherine and our family have received over the past few months,” reads the statement. “Cat saw her music go places she never expected and rests in the peace of knowing that she will continue to provide for her son through her music. This would not have been possible without all of you.”
She was originally diagnosed with Sarcoma cancer, a cancer that affects the bones and tissue, in 2021.
Though she was going through both chemotherapy and radiation, Janice continued to make music. Last year she won the Robert Allen Award from the American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers Foundation.
In July of 2022, Janice announced that she was officially cancer free. However, the cancer had come back at the beginning of January. This time in her lungs.
A few days later Janice announced she would be releasing her final song, “Dance You Outta My Head,” dedicated to her seven year old son. Along with that, Janice revealed that all proceeds from the song would also go to her son.
The TikTok community and music users around the world provided a remarkable amount of support in response.
She officially released the song on January 19th, and it reached number one on the TikTok Billboard music chart, as well as hitting the top 10 on the Billboard’s Hot Dance/ Electronic Songs chart. In addition, nearly 2.5 million TikTok users have used the sound.
“I never thought I would live to see the day where my art is #1 Billboard charting,” she wrote on Instagram. “Thank you. Thank you for giving us this moment at such a time.”
Janice passed peacefully surrounded by family. Her brother will be in charge of management operations, including the release of some art she wanted to share.
“I won’t be stuck in this body anymore,” Janice claims in her final TikTok. “I will be dancing again. I hope to see you all there.”
