This past weekend, a number of varsity athletes from Indoor track traveled to Hampton to compete in Hampton Roads Elite High School Invitational at Boo Williams Sportsplex. Many schools from around Virginia attended this meet.
In the Boy’s 55- meter dash, junior Aeron Thai led South Lakes with a time of 6.93, placing 13th out of 43 sprinters. Sophomore Brandon Terry also placed twenty-seventh with a time of 7.09. Girl’s 55- meter dash put up some great numbers, with junior Danielle Hale getting a time of 7.74, good enough to get eighteenth place out of 53 sprinters.
Sophomore Maya Rodriquez placed seventh in the Girl’s 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.49, good enough to advance to the finals where she got a time of 9.40, placing ninth out of the top 12 hurdlers at the meet.
In the relay section of the meet, girls 4×200-meter relay got an fourth place with a time of 1:49.41, while the boys 4×200-meter relay got a time of 1:35.26, good enough to get them in fifth place! The girls 4×800-meter relay placed fourth with a great time of 9:49.67 while Boys 4×800 meter relay placed eleventh with a time of 8:44.59.
In the distance section of the meet, sophomore Erin Bidwell got a time of 5:47.33 in the Mile run, placing twenty-fifth out of 47 runners. Boys Mile Run featured sophomore Colin Weirick getting a mile time of 4:57.25 and Freshman Connor Smith getting a time of 5:01.35.
Devin Nieusma placed ninth in the Girl’s 1000-meter run with an incredible time of 3:09.54 while Michael Uhrig also ran in the boys 1000- meter run, getting a time of 2:46.47, good enough to get twentieth out of 57 runners.
Mid-Distance runners represented South Lakes well. Junior Daniel Johnsen received fifteenth place with a time of 37.50 in the boys 300-meter dash out of 65 runners. In the girls 300-meter-dash, sophomore Ozioma Chinaka placed nineteenth with a time of 44.57, getting nineteenth place while sophomore Jordan Lozoma got a time of 45.09, receiving twenty-fifth place out of 65 runners.
For the 500-meter dash, senior Joey Rugari placed twenty-second with a time of 1:12.96 out of 51 runners. In the girls 500- meter dash, sophomore Augusta Durham placed fifteenth with a great time of 1:25.47, along with junior Abigail Rhinehold also placing well, getting a time of 1:25.58 and placing seventeenth.
On the Field part of the track, Freshman Skander Ballard placed twenty-ninth in the Boys High Jump, with a measure of 17 feet 4.75 inches and sophomore Brandon Terry placing thirty-first with a measure of 17 feet 1.50 inches. In the Girls Triple Jump, Maya Rodriguez placed fifteenth with a measure of 32 feet and 10 inches. Skander Ballard also placed nineteenth in the Boys Triple Jump with a measure of 37 feet and 1 inch.
The real highlight of the meet is the girls 4×400-meter relay, where they placed first with a time of 4:01.61, good enough for State Championships!
Overall, boys placed twenty-sixth out of all teams and girls placed seventh out of all the teams in attendance.
