Varsity basketball defeated Fairfax 55-51 in front of a rowdy Hype Squad crowd on Jan. 4.
Sophomore point guard Brandon Kamga hit the first shot and both teams stayed close throughout the game. Kamga scored 20 points to lead all scorers.
The game started sluggishly for the Seahawks, but they stayed closed, trailing 30-25 at halftime and 37-35 at the end of the third quarter.
“Our team struggled in the beginning missing layups and free throws,” said head coach Andrew Duggan. “I liked how the team powered through at the end.”
“I thought we played a great game but we could improve on rebounds,” said junior guard Clayton O’Neil.
Duggan said that strong defense helped contribute to the win, especially from junior guard Nick DeAtley.
“Nick guarded number 13 (Fairfax senior Zac Burnett) for a good 25 minutes, which really helped us,” said Duggan.
Burnett scored only seven points for Fairfax.
South Lakes improved to 6-6 on the season and 3-2 in district play. The next game is against Marshall on Tuesday, Jan. 8.
