Seniors won the school spirit stick at this year’s pep rally after earning a decisive five points over the sophomore class.
The rally featured many of the traditional events, including performances by the dance team, flag team, band, cheerleaders and manleaders. The team captain relay also took place and was won by members of the volleyball team.
Events that earned class spirit points included the banner competition, teacher battles and the class tug-o-war.
The class of 2013 triumphed in the banner competition, displaying an UP themed flag. Seniors also defeated the junior class in tug-o-war, which brought their total score to four spirit points.
In the teacher battle sophomore representative Charissa West won the competition and earned the class of 2015 two spirit points. The class also scored a win over the freshmen in tug-o-war, boosting their total to four points.
The turning point of the evening was the class chants, which featured a battle of sound that decides the most spirited class.
While the freshman chant was indiscernible, sophomores filled the air with a tribute to the song Apache by the Sugarhill Gang.
The junior chant used the words “You have spirit, we have more. 2-0-1-4.”
This year’s seniors had to live up to the memorable rollercoaster ride done by the class of 2012 last year. They began with a ten second countdown to lift off followed by the mantra “This is our year. This is our day. 20-13. Up up and away.”
Emerging victorious the senior class earned another five points and increased their total to nine. This score allowed them to win the coveted school spirit stick, presented by school mascot Seymour the Seahawk.
Students should prepare for the parade scheduled for 5 p.m.at the Hunters Woods shopping center as well as tonight’s Homecoming football game against Madison.
