In a school that teaches over half a dozen different languages, it is not unusual to find a student who studies two, or even three languages.
However, one student in particular aims to speak six languages.
Junior Guzman is a sophomore who is learning French, Italian, German and Japanese. His primary language is Spanish and his secondary is English.
“I like the feeling of speaking other cultures’ languages,” said Guzman. “The look on people’s faces when you speak to them is priceless.”
Guzman moved to America from El Salvador when he was 11 years old. It was this transition that sparked his interest in other languages.
“When I first came to America, my teacher opened my mind to a bunch of different languages,” said Guzman.
Guzman currently takes French and Japanese in school and is in levels two and one respectively.
At home, Guzman spends his free time focusing on learning German and Italian while utilizing his computer in his studies.
Though he comments YouTube is very helpful, he prefers a classroom environment.
“When you’re at school, you have teachers who can explain something if you don’t understand,” Guzman.
While Guzman currently sees this as a hobby, he has high hopes for the future.
“I want to major in French and get a minor in Italian,” said Guzman.
Guzman plans to attend a college where he will major in French.
After graduating from college, he would like to work as a translator for the State Department to help America interact with other countries.
