Carl Jones is a new U.S and Virginia History and World History 1 teacher at South Lakes.
Jones received both his masters and bachelors degree at Hampton University. After teaching at Hylton High school in Prince William County and Franklin Middle School, Jones wanted to apply to a new school. A friend who used to coach with Jones mentioned South Lakes with only positive comments. When the opportunity arose, Jones immediately applied for the position on the country website.
At Hylton, Jones had a good relationship with his students inside and outside the classroom. He would attend sporting and musical events, showing genuine interest in his student’s success beyond classroom walls.
“It means a lot for kids to see you support then in the things their involved in,” said Jones. “I’d rather see kids involved in school rather than run around with bad peers who never had a good foundation.”
It was these skills outside of the classroom which made Jones a good candidate for coaching. He began coaching the Hylton JV football team and has now been coaching for three years. In addition to teaching, Jones is the new assistant coach for the South Lakes freshman football team.
As far as South Lakes atmosphere is concerned Jones said, “It’s great. There are nice teachers, enthusiasm about sports, and lots of school pride.”
A note to all of Jones’s new students, Jones said that his teaching style is tough but easy going, depending on the situation.
“I just want my students to learn.”
