“On Wednesdays, we wear pink.” This is one of the most iconic quotes when it comes to movie history, coming directly from ‘Mean Girls’ (2004). This movie was a huge hit back in the 2000s and is still a big hit today. It comes as no surprise that a recreation of this popular movie from 20 years ago came out this year. The 2024 version still has the same PG-13 rating as before. Though this new Mean Girls movie by Tina Fey is similar to the 2004 film, it has its differences. One difference is that the movie is a musical. It comes with many songs, some of which may sound familiar to fans as they come from the Broadway musical Mean Girls(2018) . The plot of the movie matches the one from the original.
Although this new film adaptation of the Broadway musical doesn’t feature the original stars, it still has some familiar faces. The movie has the same Principal Duvall from the original ‘Mean Girls,’ Tim Meadows, along with Tina Fey as Mrs. Norbury. Aaron Samuels is portrayed by Christopher Briney, who plays Conrad Fisher in the well known ongoing series, ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty.’ This new movie also stars some actors in the once popular movie, ‘Senior Year’ like Avantika Vandanapu as Karen Smith, and Angourie Rice as the lead role, Cady Heron. The pop singer, Reneé Rapp, who played in the Broadway musical as Regina George, returns as the Queen Bee once again in this musical.
The movie has received many different reviews, most negative, some positive. Most fans of the original Mean Girls (2004), argue that the movie isn’t good because it’s a musical, or because the actors couldn’t sing at all.Something that upset the fans even more was the amount of Gen Z slang that was used in the movie. According to a review from Google Services, one critic wrote “The acting was so bad and it felt as though the characters were speed reading through the script rather than convincing us it’s their actual personal thoughts.” This wasn’t the only bad review, plenty of fans were disappointed with the way this movie was written and the way most of the infamous lines and moments from the original ‘Mean Girls’ were taken out. Another fan of the original movie wrote, “Mean girls (the musical) was mediocre at best. There were so many iconic moments it skimped out on and it just didn’t even compare to the original.”
Despite the negative comments about the movie, other fans liked this recreation from 2004. They believe the movie was somewhat great for a musical. For example one fan wrote, “It is a movie adaptation of the 2018 Broadway Musical Mean Girls. The musical numbers were very good and I strongly felt that Reneé Rapp carried this movie by far. But Auil’i Cravahlo and the guy playing Damien did really well too. Not the best thing ever but definitely deserves more love than it’s getting.” Some fans on the reviews continued to say that once they saw the movie, they loved it.
This new ‘Mean Girls’ had lots of negative reviews but everyone who watched it felt differently. The movie has an overall rating of 6.3/10 on Imdb and is available to watch in theaters.
