The “dramady” television series “Girls” premiered on HBO in the spring of 2012, and is directed by, created by, and stars 24-year-old Lena Dunham.
The show has been called “the voice of the new generation,” and has won two Golden Globes.
Dunham was named Time Magazine’s Coolest Person of the Year Award. She has appeared on countless talk shows ranging from The Colbert Report to Chelsea Lately.
So why is this new show attracting so much attention?
The plotline of “Girls” follows four friends, three out of college, and one who is still earning her degree. Similar to the legendary Sex in the City, “Girls” follows their lives in New York City.
But what makes “Girls” so shocking and different to other shows is the truth behind the dialogue and situations.
“Girls” is different than any other program on television because it its realistic,” senior Kenzie Hughes said. “It is the first show that I’ve ever seen that accurately depicts what being a young woman is like.”
Although many of the sexually awkward scenarios can often be uncomfortable for some viewers to watch, critics rave about the realism in Dunham’s writing.
“‘Girls’ portrays a really real image of girls. It’s also funny because it’s different from other shows,” senior Jacqueline Angel said.
Not only are critics applauding this bold new show, but there is now a huge, nationwide fan base.
“I think the great response to “Girls” is due to the accuracy of the show,” senior Rachel Berman said. “Finally there’s a show that isn’t a Hollywood façade of lip gloss and glamor that just isn’t real.”
The second season of “Girls” is currently airing on HBO on Sunday nights at 9 p.m.
