For students, friendship bracelets appear to have become the newest must-have accessory as the school year comes to a close.
“I feel like towards the end of the year people start to make them because they’re bored and need something to do in class,” said freshman Li-Chain Wang. “My sister taught me how to make them when I was little.”
Others agree with Wang’s statement on why everyone starts making them around the summer.
“You have nothing to do, so it’s the only thing to do. You do it out of boredom,” said freshman Kyra Longacre.
While some make them out of boredom, others make them for fun, or as a gift.
“I make them because it’s an all around good gift,” said freshman Carly Sands. “It’s really sentimental no matter how good or crappy it is.”
“I first started making them last summer. My sister taught me how,” said freshman Allyson Paiewonsky. “I think people give them to their friends because they’re really easy to make and they look good.”
With the rapid increase in popularity, there is a demand for them and with lots of styles to choose from. Some have made it into a business.
“I know how to make the one normal one, the one with arrows, and the one with words in them,” said Wang. “My sister started to charge for the one with words in them.”
“I can make all kinds,” said freshman Anna Stormoen.
Just because a person makes one does not mean that they will wear one.
“I only wear the ones that are easy to take on and off,” said Paiewonsky. “They get gross when you wear them in the pool and shower.”
Students wear friendship bracelets for different reasons.
“I wear them so people know more than my mommy loves me,” said freshman Scott Waters.
“People wear them because their pretty and they look cool,” said freshman Abby Reinhold.
Even the teachers are getting into them. Freshman Stephanie Huard has made some for her teachers.
