Journalists on the big screen are often interesting characters, filled with dedication to their job and career. They face tough choices and challenges throughout each adventure they go on. In this article, some of the most memorable journalist characters will be discussed, as well as what unique journeys they take on.
Andy Sachs (The Devil Wears Prada)
Andrea “Andy” Sachs, portrayed by Anne Hathaway, is an aspiring journalist who has just graduated from Northwestern University. She lands a job as a personal assistant to Miranda Priestly, the highly respected editor in chief for a fashion magazine called Runway, located in New York City. Miranda is known to be unfriendly and icy, but Andy decides that she will put up with her attitude until she has more connections and finds another job. Since Andy isn’t familiar with the world of fashion, she frequently struggles with some of the tasks and demands Miranda asks her to do, and is often mistreated and judged by her more fashionable co-workers due to the way she dresses. Andy must figure out how she will survive being Miranda’s assistant.
Jenna Rink (13 going on 30)
Portrayed by Jennifer Garner and Christa B. Allen, Jenna Rink starts off being a dorky thirteen year old girl in 1987, who wishes to be popular and successful. She specifically wants to join a clique at school called the “Six Chicks,” however, after a humiliating experience at her 13th birthday party with the Six Chicks and their leader, Lucy also known as “Tom-Tom,” all Jenna desires to be is “thirty, flirty, and thriving.” She later strangely awakens as her 30-year-old self in 2004 and comes to find that she is a magazine editor for Poise, her favorite fashion magazine from when she was thirteen. She also discovers that “Tom-Tom” is now her best friend and they work together. Since she has no memory of the past seventeen years of her life, she has to rely on her best friend from highschool, Matt “Matty” Flamhaff. Unfortunately, he can’t really help her because he was no longer her friend after High School. Jenna realizes that being a grown up isn’t as easy as it seems.
Rory Gilmore (Gilmore Girls)
In the beginning of the acclaimed sitcom, Rory Gilmore is an aspiring journalist. Her journey to becoming one starts at Chilton High School, where she joins the school newspaper called The Franklin and writes for the newspaper throughout her junior and senior year. Once she graduates high school, she attends Yale University, in which she continues her journey to becoming a journalist, by writing for the Yale Daily News. Throughout most of her college years, she wrote for the paper and even became the editor in chief eventually. Rory’s journalist career has its ups and downs, but after graduating from Yale, she gets an opportunity to cover Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign, which is a huge milestone for her.
Peter Parker (Spider-Man)
Portrayed by Tobey Maguire, Spider-Man, also known as Peter Parker, is an interesting character, who goes through the dual life of being a superhero and a journalist. In the Spider-Man trilogy by Sam Raimi, Peter starts off as a highschool student who gains spider-like abilities after he is bit by a genetically engineered spider. Peter later finds work as a freelance photographer for the Daily Bugle, a New York City newspaper. His main job is to capture good quality and exclusive pictures of Spiderman. Throughout the trilogy, Peter’s role at the daily newspaper is challenging because he has to balance his personal life and his responsibilities as Spiderman.
Andie Anderson (How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days)
Portrayed by Kate Hudson, Andie Anderson works as a journalist for a women’s fashion magazine called Composure. She is tasked with writing an article called “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” where she must date a guy and try to get broken up with in ten days by making relationship mistakes. Meanwhile, the guy she meets, Benjamin Barry, an advertising executive who has a very similar task, only he is betting that he can make any woman fall in love with him in ten days so that he can lead a big advertising campaign. Throughout the movie, Andie tries to drive Ben away with absurd behavior, but Ben is determined to win his bet.
