Nintendo finally revealed their long-awaited successor to the Nintendo Switch, their hit-handheld console on Thursday, January 16th, 2025.
Unverified reports and speculation have circulated for several weeks regarding the anticipated reveal date. Eager fans expected an official announcement from Nintendo on Wednesday regarding the reveal date. However, the expected announcement was not made, causing disappointment and uncertainty within the community. But as predicted, Nintendo uploaded a video, shocking fans.
The long-awaited Switch 2 reveal confirms some information that was previously leaked: the joy-cons now utilize electromagnetic connections instead of charging rails, a new ‘C’ button, and a sleek black design with blue and red accents. The console itself includes an increased size, an additional USB-C port at the top, and a redesigned kickstand for improved stability.
The Switch 2 will feature backward compatibility with games of its predecessor, but it is noted that not all games will be compatible with the Switch 2.
Towards the end of the reveal video, Nintendo uses the remaining time to announce the Switch 2 presentation which is scheduled for Wednesday, April 2, 2025, a time will be shared at some point as we get closer to the presentation date. This event will be live-streamed on their official YouTube channel.
After the live-streamed broadcast, Nintendo will host the Nintendo Switch 2 Experience, a series of events that allow individuals to get a hands-on experience with the console. The events will be held from Friday, April 4th – Sunday, April 6th, 2025 in New York, Friday, April 11th – Sunday, April 13th, 2025 in Los Angeles, and Friday, April 25 – Sunday, April 27, 2025 in Dallas. The event requires entry tickets, however Nintendo utilizes a raffle system to issue tickets. Group and individual registrations are permitted but it is required that all members own a Nintendo Account and are part of the same Nintendo Account family group.
