The new musical movie “Wicked”, that is now released, has taken movie theaters by storm. It has received an 89% rating by Rotten Tomatoes, 8.1/10 rating by IMDb, and an audience rating of 4.2 stars. For only being out less than a month, the film is the 7th grossing film of the year and has made an earring of $214 million in domestic box office sales. With fans loving the amazing cast, songs, and beautiful storytelling, “Wicked” has been a big hit these past weeks.
This two part film adaptation is based on the stage musical, “Wicked”. The stage musical is loosely based on the 1995 novel by Georgry Magurie, which is based on the 1900s novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum. The Broadway performance “Wicked” was the second highest grossing musical ever, with two national tours. Since the play production has been performed over 8,000 times and is the fourth longest running Broadway show, there is no question why the movie is so popular. The movie includes all the songs and scenes from the Broadway production and even expanded some of the scenes. Fans were overjoyed when finding this out and were happy to see the Broadway touch brought into a movie theater.
The film follows a young woman, Elphaba, who is misunderstood because of her green skin that befriends Glinda, a student with a desire for popularity. As the two encounter the Wizard of Oz, their friendship divides as they both have to take very different paths. The pop star Ariana Grande plays Glinda, while actress Cynthia Ervio plays Elphaba. The casting of this movie is spectacular. These two celebrities take on challenging roles, but handle it beautifully as they bring their two characters to the screen. With their talented vocals and on screen chemistry, the two are able to convey intense emotions and a powerful bond between these complex characters.
“Wicked” is so amazing because of its way to connect to the audience. It sends a message of self identity, equality, and friendship. It’s also related to morals and standing up for what you believe in. The movie is very energetic and entertaining with its fun musical scenes. These musical aspects add an emphasis of the film’s themes and feeling.
One South Lakes student mentioned its importance and influence after watching the film.
“I thought it was a creative way to call attention to the unnecessary social standards the human race has,” said Junior Morgan Kass.
