South Lakes hosted their second annual Late Night at the Byrd on Saturday, November 23rd! The school welcomed their Boys and Girls basketball teams with an epic night hosted by the athletic leadership class.
The event included exciting 3 point contests, dunk contests, a thrilling performance by the South Lakes Dance Team, raffle prizes, and of course contests for seahawk fans! Students and members of the community also had the opportunity to get pictures and autographs with the state champions.
After the boy’s basketball scrimmage, the festivities began. Crowds filled in the stands, waiting excitedly for the players to take the court.
In groups of two, players from the varsity girls and boys teams fled onto the court, equipped with t-shirts to launch into the screaming crowd. They took their seats and watched as their teammates competed in a 3-point shot competition. One by one, players attempted to shoot the most 3-point shots from different parts of the court. The winner of this competition, Jordan Scott, was gifted a $25 dollar gift card for his success.
After the 3-point shoot-out, fans were invited onto the court to attempt a half-court shot. With everybody being welcomed, children short and tall jumped with all their might to launch a ball into the net. Proud parents stood and watched from the sidelines, while photographers captured some of the best moments.
The event was not limited to students, instead, family and friends held space in the stands to cheer. The athletic leadership team worked hard to create a dynamic evening of entertainment for the community to come together and raise excitement for the upcoming basketball season.
By the end of the event, the athletes lined up to sign autographs for eager fans. Jerseys, balls, and more were decorated with the signatures of hardworking seahawks, and children ran off gripping their new memorabilia close to their hearts.
The South Lakes’ basketball program has been incredibly successful in the past few years. In 2023, the Boys team won the state championship with a record of 26-2 while being undefeated in the district! The girls team had a great season too, building off of their accomplishments in the previous years.
Students who missed out on the opportunity to come should go ahead and reserve a seat for next year. Events like these are the most fun when lots of people come out to support!
“Our team worked so hard to practice our dance routine for Late Night at the Byrd and we were so happy to show everybody,” Senior Laura Dominquez said, grinning from ear to ear.
The South Lakes community is looking forward to another great basketball season, and another year of continuing the Late Night at the Byrd tradition!
