South Lakes’ annual Senior Sunrise took the school by storm on Friday, September 20th. Following homecoming week, senior students headed to South Lakes before the sun came up to experience the beautiful sunrise together.
In a bittersweet and honorable tradition, members of the class of 2025 arrived at the football field as early as 6 in the morning to meet with their classmates. In a slight change, this year’s Senior Sunrise was combined with the annual wall signing tradition. Students shined their flashlights to combat the morning’s darkness as they signed their names on the class of 2025 wall in blue and green paint. These names will remain in place all year, serving as a reminder of the unity of this class of students and friends.
Students continued the morning by playing soccer or volleyball and conversing with friends. Parent volunteers supplied the event with Dunkin Donuts in an effort to make the morning feel special.
Some students took on the responsibility of making and bringing in their own posters for photo opportunities! Decorative “Senior Sunrise” signs shined with smiling faces poking through. Sofi Pehrson, a member of the Senior Class Council, took time out of her busy schedule to make posters for the event in an effort to make the morning more exciting. After painting the 2025 wall blue and green, she headed home to craft her posters.
“I loved making the posters at home. I thought it was a fun way to be creative and I think it made people happy to take pictures with them in the morning. I wanted Senior Sunrise to be a good memory of my friends,” Sofi said.
This tradition started over a decade ago, and has made its way to many schools in America. It serves as a way to gather students in a celebration of their high school careers as they begin to move into adulthood. Senior year is about making memories and preparing for the future.
