Spirit fills the halls at South Lakes on the days leading up to homecoming night. The week’s themes included Colors of the Bayou on Monday, Almost There day on Tuesday, New Orleans Nap Time on Wednesday, Princess and the Frog day on Thursday, and Class Color Beads on Friday.
Monday began with Colors of the Bayou. Students showed up wearing their best blue and green clothes to kick the week off strong. Some students even came with costumes of popular blue and green characters like Aliens in Toy Story. Others donned bright green and blue tutus and bold hats to match the theme.
Almost There day, where included students dressed in clothes that represent future careers, donning the dress of doctors, lawyers, and chefs.
“I feel like it was nice to see people dressed up as their future, being able to see that far, it’s like a window into the future,” Junior Randey Orellana said.
Pajama day, had students arriving at school in their comfiest robes, sleeping masks, and even onesies.
“It’s really fun and easy to do, and you’re comfy all day,” sophomore Zachary Masefield said.
Princess and the Frog day, also known as Duo day, had students and their friends dressed in popular pairs and occasionally trios, such as Thing 1 and Thing 2, Mario and Luigi, and as the name suggests, the Princess and the Frog.
“My favorite spirit day theme was dynamic duo day because I got to plan something with my friends,” sophomore Jack Cassee explains.
Spirit week ended with Class Color beads; each grade has a different “color theme” for the day. Every year Seniors dress in orange, Juniors in yellow, Sophomores in blue, and Freshman in green.
“I think it’s the most hype and a lot of people do it and participate,” Senior Sofia Ponce says.
Each day, Leadership students pop into fifth and sixth period classes to count how many people participated. The grade with the most points wins the Spirit Stick, awarded during the pep rally.
Students vote on which student, within the entire school, was the most spirited. The winner of this competition is crowned “spirit court winner,” and receives a stick of their own.
This year, spirit week ended with the Senior class winning the class spirit stick, and senior Jordan Scott winning the individual spirit court.
