The American rapper, Ice Spice, has come out with a new single, titled “Gimme a Light” from her upcoming album, “Y2K.” Fans are excited to hear new work from the artist after her stellar debut. The rapper’s rise to fame started after releasing her 2023 hit song, “Munch (Feelin’ U)” from her debut EP “Like..?” Ice Spice gained immense popularity after the Canadian rapper, Drake, supported “Munch” and she went on to win the iHeartRadio, MTV Video Music and People’s Choice awards for “Best New Hip-Hop Artist,” “Best New Artist,” and “The New Artist of the Year.”
Earlier this year, Ice Spice revealed that she was working on her new album titled Y2K. On March 5, 2024, the rapper confirmed that she’s officially finished recording her debut studio LP. “I think this is some of my best work,” she said in an interview with Billboard, “It’s not going to be too long, it’s going to be sweet and to the point.”
During a February interview with the Today Show, she stated that the album will include a “crazy collaboration” and new sounds. “It’s definitely gonna be a drill album,” she said. “But I have a lot of different sounding beats that I haven’t really been hearing on much, so I’m excited for those more than anything.” The artist added, “I really want to know what my fans think about these new sounding songs.”
The tracklist is currently unknown but Ice Spice posted a teaser for her single, “Gimme a Light”, from the upcoming album, released on May 10. Fans got their first listen to the song during her Coachella set last month. Ice Spice samples Sean Paul’s hit song “Gimme the Light” from 2002. The song is produced by her longtime producer, RiotUSA. In the music video, Ice Spice is seen driving through New York in a hot pink Range Rover with a “Y2K” license plate with bikers following behind.
During an Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe, Ice Spice admitted to being “nervous” about sampling Sean Paul’s song. “I was really nervous because we really wanted to have a very authentic Y2K sample in there, and Sean Paul, he’s legendary,” she said. “And that song alone, his ‘Gimme the Light’, is so iconic that I was so nervous to sample it, because I’m like, ‘This isn’t going to get cleared, so what’s the point?’”
The single gained a total of 897k streams on the first day of its release on Spotify. The “In Ha Mood” rapper’s fanbase has different opinions. Some commented on how her style isn’t so different from what she claimed it to be, but most of her fans adore the song and are excited for her album release.
