The International Club here at South Lakes is dedicated to bringing students together and learning about diversity. During their meetings, club members celebrate different holidays from around the world and learn about their customs and traditions. “Seeing that our school and community is so diverse motivated us to create a club in which students would learn about other people’s perspectives and values, build better relationships with others, and be more open to others’ ideas and beliefs,” said International Club President, Bryan Viera.

This club was first created at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year with the help of ESOL teachers, and other students who wanted to bring celebrate our community’s diversity and bring everyone even closer together. The main goal of the club is for students to not only learn about other people’s beliefs and views, but to give them a better understanding of the differences and struggles that others have to go through. Getting to learn about cultures can shape their personalities and allows them to be more respectful of other points of view. It can also open students’ eyes and peak an interest in multiple cultures.

The International Club celebrates the holidays by following the right dates on the calendar. They never fail to surprise students with something new! Speaking from experience, I joined in and witnessed the celebration of Diwali and Hanukkah. Both were splendid holidays that we all enjoyed!

Anyone can join the club. To those interested, the International Club holds meetings twice a month and they always advertise on the morning announcements and their Remind group – so don’t miss out!
