Student Spotlight: Austin Shea
Senior Austin Shea, a.k.a. the “Describer,” has become quite popular on SoundCloud. His hit “You Left While I Was Sleeping” has over 82,000 listens. His most recent song “Falling” – which features junior Camille Denny – has around 2,500 listens.
“I’ve always enjoyed listening to music as a kid, and I would even have fake concerts in my room. When I got older, I finally gained enough courage to start putting my own music out there,” Shea stated. Inspired by EDM and dubstep music, he purchased his own DJ table when he was 14.
Shea sells t-shirts, sweatshirts, and phone cases to his fans. 100% of his profits are donated to the Shields family back in Pueblo, Colorado (where Shea used to live). When their son, Amanias, died in a horrific car accident on July 15th of this year, Shea was absolutely heartbroken. “He was my best friend and one of the people who pushed me to make more music,” he said. He hopes that Amanias’ parents will use the money on something important, for their fourteen-year-old daughter, Beauticy, to go to college. He’s promised to always support the Shields family, and he wears Amanias’ chain everyday.
“If things don’t work out in music, I want to continue to create clothes and art or work in digital design,” Shea said, “I don’t care if I never become famous; creating songs is just something I do when I’m bored or when I’m sad or just for fun. It’s my passion.” He wants to be an inspiration to future singers and songwriters by encouraging them to be confident and pursue what they love.
