.) Drive out to Wayne Theater (in Waynesboro, Virginia) and see SkateTacular Dreams on Ice, which tells the tale of a girl in search of eternal winter. It is both a musical and a skate show that features an all-star cast of professional skaters, dancers, singers, dancers, and cirque performers. People of all ages are sure to love this dazzling on-ice production and its whimsical, one-of-a-kind storyline!

.) Up for a challenge? In celebration of George Washington’s birthday, restaurants all throughout Alexandria, Virginia will be featuring tons of tasty cherry-themed dishes. Compete to buy and rate the most Cherry Challenge entries. Not only do you get to sample a lot of great food…the winner also receives a “Frequent Cherry Diner Award,” which will be announced during the George Washington Birthday Parade! The winning dish last year was River Bend Bistro’s impressive grilled quail with Pinot Noir cherry sauce, and I expect this year’s cherry dishes to be nothing less than delicious.

.) If you like food and you’re looking to save money, you’re in luck! Restaurants across Virginia and throughout the U.S. are taking part in the 2018 Winter Restaurant Week. This weekend, participating eateries and fine dining establishments will be offering special menus that include special dishes and drastically reduced prices (you’ll find some great deals, no coupons required). Enjoy a fancy meal for half the price! For lunch with the fam, go with Clyde’s of Georgetown (they have a fireplace). For a date night dinner, make a reservation at 1789 Restaurant (black tie, white tablecloth affairs are always romantic).

.) Destination: New York
Take a destination vacation to the Big Apple over the long weekend – this thriving city is full of fun things to do! Take in a Broadway show (your choices include Wicked, A Bronx Tale, Anastasia, Phantom of the Opera, and Lion King), go on a scavenger hunt through Central Park, tour the Yankee Stadium, or visit the breathtaking Highline park. New York is also taking part in Winter Restaurant Week, so you have the chance to try some of their finest cuisine. I recommend Del Frisco’s Steakhouse, home of the finest Filet Mignons you’ll ever find. (They have white tablecloths for a reason. It’s so upscale that you won’t be able to afford it at any other time, so take advantage.) When it comes to places to go and things to do, your options certainly aren’t limited, so I encourage you to go exploring and see what NYC had to offer.

.) Attend the Sailing Through the Winter Solstice event in Frederick, Maryland. Boats adorned with different colored lights will be sailing down the lovely Carroll Creek, which has over 40 varieties of vibrantly colored plants – in all shapes and sizes – that grow on the water. It’s all for a good cause: the proceeds of this event go to Color on the Creek (the nonprofit organization that made this possible) and several other charities. Come experience the beauty of the creek and the the decorated boats! Also, if you decide to wander around Downtown Fredericksburg (please do), you might find that’s it’s quite charming.

.) Strengthen your sleuthing skills! Your mission is to investigate the International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C. This is the only museum in the U.S. dedicated solely to espionage-one of the most intriguing and demanding professions ever (one you should learn more about). It contains films, interactives, high-tech exhibits, and an extensive number of spy artifacts so you can get a taste of what it’s like to be a secret agent (both in real life and in film). A trench coat and magnifying glass are not required in order to enjoy the museum and become the next James Bond…but if you have those items, you’re off to a great start.
