5 Things to Do This Weekend (1/13 – 1/14)
1.) Be a part of the 2018 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, which will be held in the Reston Community Center to honor one of America’s most beloved civil rights activists. The community center has partnered with local organizations (such as Cornerstones and Embry Rucker Community Shelter) in his honor. Carry on his legacy of helping others by participating in putting together bagged lunches for the shelter, sorting and organizing donated items for the Southgate Community Center, and participating in other service projects. Listen to the Reston Community Orchestra as you browse the MLK art exhibit.

2.) Go to the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and see “On Your Feet.” This inspirational musical (based on a true story!) takes you into the lives of Emilio and Gloria Estefan, a Cuban couple that came to America. Together, they overcame all odds, broke barriers, and became musical sensations. End the evening right with a fancy dinner at the Rooftop Terrace restaurant, which has incredible skyline views of our nation’s capital.

3.) Need a good laugh? Go to the DC Comedy Jam on Saturday at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, DC! The lineup for the evening includes Deray Davis, Corey Holcomb, Earthquake, and DOMINIQUE. I don’t know much about the topics or content of their skits, but I do know that they are all highly acclaimed comedians that will have you rolling in the aisles.

4.) Spend a lazy Sunday afternoon in Alexandria, Virginia! Take the trolley down King Street. They have many renowned restaurants, shops, and historical attractions along the way that you can stop at as you please. I recommend brunch at Daniel O’Connell’s, an Irish Pub with a (real) fireplace and live jazz. Stop and shop in Red Barn Mercantile or check out the Dust Farm Skateboard Shop and Museum (two options out of MANY). Sit back in relax in Alexandria Cupcake, where the cupcakes are as good as they look (and they are picturesque).

5.) Join the fun with Leesburg’s 5th Annual Winter Ice Festival and Mega Block Ice Carving Competition on Saturday afternoon. Watch 8 world renowned ice carvers compete for prizes in the competition, and enjoy the music and ice skating rink as well! Head to Roots 657, a local market and café, for dinner afterwards (you’ll thank me later).
