Interact participates in Senior Senior Prom
Interact members participated in the 12th annual Senior Senior Prom, making it the last volunteer event of the school year. It was held at St. Josephs Hall near the Herndon Community Center June 14 from 2-4 p.m.
Area residents over the age of 50 were encouraged to attend and the admittance fee was free with donations accepted at the door. The Hawaiian themed prom featured the Loudoun Jazz Ensemble and “Gottaswing Dancers Dancers.”
“The best part of volunteering at Senior Senior Prom was watching the swing dancers,” junior Rebekah Carrai said. “They danced when everyone else was on the dance floor and they were really amazing performers.”
There were around 10 volunteers who arrived at 1 p.m. to help set up decorations and prepare for guests arrival. The attire varied from dresses and skirts to Hawaiian apparel.
“I decided to go because I wanted to give back to my community in a way that would make others happy,” junior Michelle Ma said. “It was my pleasure to be there and help out. Also, it made me happy to see everyone else having a great time.”
Jobs during the event included working the drink area, pinning on boutonnieres and corsages, running the photo booth, and cleaning up after the event ended.
“My favorite part was helping to pin flowers onto everyone’s dresses because it let me converse with practically everyone,” Ma said. “People were so kind and generous throughout the whole event.”
Ma enjoyed her time working at the event and hopes to participate again next spring.
“I got the pleasure of working with many wonderful people in our community,” Ma said. “Not only were the senior citizens wonderful, but also the volunteers working alongside of me.”
During the final meeting of the year, Interact named Angie McCarthy, Daniel Gurley, and Michelle Ma officers for the 2014-15 school year. The club will continue to focus on helping the community with Shelter Box and partnering with Reston Cornerstones.
