Philosophy Club offers intellectual nourishment
The Philosophy Club, founded by junior Julian Levy-Myers and sponsored by math teacher Antony Sharp, provides students with food for thought.
At yesterday’s after school meeting in Sharp’s trailer, club members munched on chips and chocolate chip cookies while considering the role of language in philosophy. Sharp led a group discussion and then played a video segment that Myers found in which philosophers Bryan Magee and John Searle talk about the history of the philosophy of language.
Levy-Myers was introduced to philosophy through his experience with Lincoln-Douglas debate, a competitive activity centered on logic and ethical values. His interest ultimately led him start a club for students to share ideas.
“The purpose is to learn about philosophy and promote good discourse,” Levy-Myers said.
Each biweekly Wednesday meeting is dedicated to exploring a specific subject. Past topics include empiricism, the philosophy of history, and Plato’s “Allegory of The Cave” told in “The Republic.” Students will focus on religion at the next meeting.
Levy-Myers is pleased with the progress that participants are making.
“I think that the quality of discussion has been improving as the club has gone on,” Levy-Myers said.
