QRU? Librarian Veronica Sedgwick

Veronica Sedgwick is the new South Lakes librarian after working as a FCPS substitute teacher.

What are some of your favorite things to do in your spare time?

Exercise; work in my garden; and reading, of course.

What encouraged you to become a librarian?

I just kind of lucked into it. And I am very grateful. I’ve always volunteered in my children’s schools; one place more than others being the library. I was a substitute teacher for a year and a half before my position with South Lakes became available. And when it did, I jumped at the chance.

Where did you go to school, and what did you study? Did you always plan on becoming a librarian?

I graduated from the University of South Carolina with a BS in Computer Science. I had worked in the IT field for 11 years. I decided to become an at-home mom when we found out we were going to have twins. When they began high school, I decided to go back into the work force. I knew I had to go back to college to refresh my computer skills, but really wasn’t ready to do that. I really didn’t want to spend that much time away from my family. I figure I can go back to that after my children graduate high school. So, since I have been in the schools volunteering, I figure, why not substitute teach. It allows a flexible schedule and best of all, I get to work with awesome children as well as phenomenal teachers/administrators. So, even though I had not planned on becoming a librarian, and had always revered those who were, now, FCPS has given me an opportunity to pursue an interest I might not have otherwise been able to have.

Where did you work before you came to South Lakes?

I was a substitute instructional assistant/teacher with FCPS.

What do you like best about South Lakes?

The students, of course.

What are some of your personal favorite books?

Any title by Richard Peck, especially, “A Year Down Yonder.” Mr. Peck, just by the way, was at The National Book Festival this past week-end. Any title by Margaret Atwood, especially, “Blue Beard’s Egg.” Ms. Atwood was also the National Book Festival. And any title by Jamaica Kincaid, especially “Annie John.” Ms. Kincaid was supposed to be at the festival, but couldn’t attend.
