QRU? Biology teacher Jennifer Holah
After teaching for 11 years, Dr. Holah is still up and teaching biology. As of 2013, this will be her sixth year at South Lakes High School.
Where are you originally from?
I grew up in New York City.
How many years have you taught science?
I’ve taught high school biology for six years and college biology for about five years.
How many years have you taught at SLHS?
This is my sixth year.
When teaching science, what topic are you most excited to cover?
I like teaching the plant science unit in HL IB Bio because botany was my research field. I enjoy genetics in freshmen bio because the students seem to like it the best.
How did you come into the career of teaching?
I had to teach undergraduate classes to pay for my graduate level education. First it was really difficult because I am naturally shy, but I found that I enjoyed the challenge and liked connecting with students.
Have you done anything before teaching? If so, what was your occupation?
I worked for the US Forest Service as a forest pathologist [tree doctor].
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love being with my own kids, I knit, swim, and run, but not all at the same time!
Do you have any hobbies?
Knitting is my biggest chill hobby. It’s my zen time.
Is there anything you find exciting about teaching High School?
One of the best things about teaching high school is watching the students change from freshmen to seniors. The growth in intelligence, maturity, and actual height is amazing!
