For most people, science is just a subject they learn in school. For freshman Charlie Guan, science is his passion.
Guan was the winner of the science fair in his category, and went to states for Science Olympiad in the categories of Designer Genes, Anatomy, Water Quality and Physiology.
“I joined Science Olympiad because I am passionate about science, especially genetics,” Guan said. “That is why I especially competed in Designer Genes at the Regional and State tournament.”
Guan is also proud of his accomplishment of competing in Science Fair at Regionals.
“I felt pretty great because accomplishing something in a field you really enjoy and love is a rewarding experience for me,” Guan said on his first place title at the school science fair.
“I got the idea for my science fair project when my dad got a fungal infection and I was wondering what over-the counter medicine or natural remedy would be the best treatment for that,” Guan said. “I developed a homemade apparatus to investigate the effect of anti fungal agents on the growth of yeast.”
“At the state tournament for Science Olympiad, we didn’t do great, nor did we do badly,” Guan said. “Next year we are aiming higher,”
Guan is also a varsity track athlete, and competed in the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles at District Championships.
“My season in track went splendid. I started cross country in August and then became a hurdler starting from indoor track because I love hurdling and enjoyed practicing,” Guan said. “My hard work paid off when I became varsity in the outdoor track season and competed at Districts.”
Guan was born in Kobe, Japan and his parents hail from China.
“I haven’t visited Japan or China in a very long time, but I wish I was able to back to my hometown in Japan but I am too busy and just don’t have the time,” Guan said.
Guan looks forward to more success in the science field as well as on the track.
