The Sentinel staff ventured to a former speakeasy in Minneapolis, Minnesota called the 5-8 Club to experience a Minnesota specialty.
This club was a speakeasy until December 5, 1933 when Prohibition ended. At that point, they became known for their burgers, especially the Juicy Lucy, which consists of two meat patties with American cheese packed in between.
“About 95 percent of our orders are for the Juicy Lucy burger,” said supervisor Nora Wessling.
Members of The Sentinel staff that went to Minneapolis unanimously agreed that the burger was phenomenal.
“It was amazing,” said sophomore Sara Bolanos. “It was so cool because when you squeezed the burger, cheese oozed out of the sides.”
However, Matt’s Bar, another restaurant in the area, serves a similar burger delicacy.
The rivalry between the Juicy Lucy and Matt’s Bar began after Matt’s Bar created their own burger they also named the “Juicy Lucy.”
“Matt’s is just down the street,” said Wessling. “We are not horrible rivals. It is relatively friendly between us.”
The Travel Channel sought the two restaurants out for a food war between the burgers. Matt’s Bar ended up with the victory.
“It was not an upsetting defeat,” said Wessling. “In fact, it was an amazing experience to get to meet celebrities and the whole experience was fun.”
The 5-8 Club has always been fairly busy, but it is popularity increased significantly after the food war.
