Interact is a service club sponsored by Dr. Emily Wishcow, a chemistry teacher.
Interact meets every first and third Thursday at Dr. Wishcow’s room, 430. Interact consists about 20 active students, grades 9-12, in Interact participating in community service at least once a month.
Interact focuses on doing a combination of community services, local and international. Locally, they participate in Reston Association activities, such as the Halloween trial and stream clean-ups. Interact also do their own food drive, the Thanksgiving Food Drive. Internationally, Interact mostly do fundraisers.
“Last year we did a fundraiser for the Harambi Shelter in the Nirobi slums of Africa,” senior Dory DeWeese, leader of Interact said. “This year we are raising money for ShelterBox, which provided disaster relief for people in need in international countries.”
What DeWeese loves about Interact is how everyone is selfless and always wanting to help.
“We all want to make a positive contribution to the world,” DeWeese said. “It has been amazing for me to be an officer for three years with these type of really and truly giving and caring people.”
Like DeWeese, junior Stephanie Huard, another officer, also has passion for Interact.
“Interact is a great way to get involved in service,” Huard said. “It opens your eyes to a whole new world of opportunities.”
Although the members of Interact vary in grades, Huard worries that the club will die once she leaves because there are not many underclassmen involvement in leadership.
