Muslim Student Association is an organization that advocates for Muslim students at South Lakes. Every Monday after school, MSA holds a meeting to organize different events and activities.
“It’s a great way to meet new people that come from the same religious background as you,” said freshman Aziza Kurta. “We debate different issues we feel are important. It’s fun and educational at the same time.”
Since MSA started, there are certain activities held every year. Some examples of these activities are bake sales held right after school and henna tattooing for students during lunch. Additionally, speakers come in from different colleges each year to talk about MSA programs in college, MIST, and scholarships.
Around spring time, students from MSA compete in a national competition called MIST—Muslim Interscholastic Tournament—which is held in different states and lasts for three days. Different students take part in different sections of the competition like debate, writing, art, photography, movies, and nasheeds (religious songs). All students are welcome and encouraged to participate. At the end of the three day competition there is an award ceremony.
“Last year we had a student go on to the national level of MIST,” senior Sana Rauf said “Unfortunately he didn’t win but we were proud that he made it till the national level.”
This year MSA has had one of the biggest turnouts in a few years.
“MSA isn’t known much right now but by the end of the year we’re hoping it will be recognized as a part of the school.” said president Rayyan Salih.
