In the morning you might hear guitars playing from the hallways. What you hear is the guitar class taught by Matthew Kullikowsky.
Kullikowsky plays the bass and the guitar too. His room is located towards the back of the school near the art room.
Kullikowsky is from Reston and went to Langston Hughes and attended Herndon. He spent three years at University of Minnesota and he has master degrees from UVA and GMU. From UVA he has a Masters in Education and a Masters in linguistics and Spanish literature from GMU.
Nothing really inspired him to play other than he was in bands in his high school years. Kullikowsky played for more than twenty bands through his high school years. The first school he taught at was Centerville. He started teaching at South Lakes in 2006 as a Spanish teacher.
His students are currently working and learning on chords at the moment, which are a few notes placed together to make harmony. Students learn various songs to improve on their skills and to have something to play. They’ve been working on the songs “Can You Feel The Love Tonight,” and “American Pie.” Their most recent show was the winter show which was for levels 1-3.
They go on some trips in which they perform and learn new knowledge about music. One of their trips is going to be to South Carolina where they will attend clinics, tour around, and even go to the beach.
Students in the class say they love Kullikowsky and think he is a great teacher.
“He’s a great cool and really fun teacher,” freshman Alexa Yumil.
“I enjoy the class and love the teacher,” freshman Lashay Valo said.
“Guitar class gives students a great opportunity and involvement in music,” Kullikowsky said. “They can learn and start to appreciate it. It also is something you can take with you forever.”
