Many oppose beauty pageants for their nature of competition. These competitions have created controversy for awarding prizes to those with “good looks,” instead of recognizing people for their best qualities.
However, at South Lakes, this idea is transformed into an event to raise money for the betterment of the students.
Mr. Seahawk is a fundraiser run by the junior class every year to lower the price of prom ticket.
The contest has five competition categories including class color, formal, swimwear, and talent with a final round of a questionnaire.
“My favorite part of Mr. Seahawk is the talent portion,” said senior competitor Dylan Clark. “People tend to do humorous things so last year I had my friend Dylan Reiser play the flute while I pretended to play, it was really funny.”
While many students enjoy the friendly competition, many faculty members enjoy watching students work together for one cause.
“Mr. Seahawk is one of the things at the school where all classes can work together for something,” said secretary Liz Knapp.
This year the event is scheduled for March 20 in the Little Theater.
