The former 20 year old Boston College ice hockey star Ryan Leonard just signed a three year contract with an average annual of $950,000. Then less than 48 hours later Boston College lost to Denver in the NCAA Regional Final on Sunday knocking them out before the Frozen Four. Leonard had his NHL debut on April 1st in Boston against the Boston Bruins. Before, Leonard was selected the number eight pick by the Capitals in the NHL entry draft in 2023.
Just 24 hours before spinning, Leonard went out to meet some of his Capitals teammates.
“Just to go to dinner with those guys and meet all those guys, really just trying to embrace the moment, spend quality time with those guys. Not a lot of time you’re getting to go to dinner with one of the greats, so just trying to embrace it,” said Leonard.
Leonard made his debut as a top six forward on the team, and with a win against the Bruins in a familiar rink, since he played in it during the Beanpot Tournament for Boston College. Many friends and family members were there in support for Leonard, including many of his Boston College teammates.
“Just going out there for a morning skate and just thinking about being here at BC, and then now turning the page and being a pro. It’s pretty weird to think about, but it’s pretty cool,” said Leonard.
Besides already making his NHL debut at the age of 20, Leonard has already had some big accomplishments in his ice hockey career. He showed enough maturity and poise when playing for the United States, helping them win two consecutive gold medals for the first time IIHF World Junior Championship. He was named most valuable player in the tournament, and he was the first NCAA player with back to back 30 goal seasons since Cam Atkions for Boston College in 2011. He was also the first Boston College skater since Johnny Gaudreau in 2014 to be named Hockey East Player of the Year.
The Capitals have already clinched a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs, and they have nine games left in the regular season. Leonard could provide a boost for the team that is needed when entering the playoffs and maybe be the new star of the Capitals once NHL great Alex Ovechkin retires.
