“I know. I know you had to wait a little bit but that doesn’t matter because you’re coming to Seattle man. You’re going to play with the Seahawks and you’re gonna catch footballs from Russell Wilson!” These were the words spoken by former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll to the soon to be Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf during the emotional moments in which he would be taken during the 2nd round of the 2020 NFL draft. He would join veteran Seahawks receiver Tyler Lockett and superstar quarterback Russell Wilson in one of the most dominant offenses in the NFL.
Yesterday, Wednesday March 5th, 2025, the Seahawks made the saddening, yet inevitable decision to release Tyler Lockett. If they hadn’t, Locketts’ restructured contract would’ve gotten him $30 Million over two years, which frankly, many don’t think he’s worth. Possibly five years ago when he was putting up great numbers, perhaps due to Russell Wilson’s position remaining on the teams roster at the time. But even then, $30 million is more than enough to replace Lockett with several players who could potentially fill his position. This decision has spread despair across the Seattle fanbase as Lockett is viewed as one of the last remaining players from the early 2010’s era of the Seahawks, which had arguably the best Seahawks, and NFL team ever.
While the fans and players were completely heartstruck and were barely able to contain their sadness for the loss, they took another massive hit. Just hours after Lockett was cut, star wide receiver DK Metcalf requested a trade. This was completely unexpected as though the team lost Lockett, last season young receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba showed his true colors as a key player with mounds of potential and talent. The pair would’ve dominated every NFL defense, especially with an anticipated quarterback draft pick. Without either of the long-time Seahawks receivers, Njigba won’t have a proper role model, and may not be able to grow as exponentially as he had last season.
In the original announcement, analyst Matt Schafer, the individual who revealed the request claimed “the request came today after a series of conversations over the past two weeks. Metcalf prefers a contender.”
The Seahawks would ultimately trade Metcalf to the Steelers on March 10th, yet many don’t consider the Steelers to have much potential, even regarding the playoffs.
Now that many key pieces of the Seattle offense are gone, what are your predictions for their performance in the upcoming season?
