On January 20th, Anthony Santander signed a five year 100 million dollar deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. The 30 year old outfielder and 2024 all star coming of a career high slugging percentage over 155 games played this season. He has been a part of the Orioles for eight years starting his career as a 22 year old in 2017.
But he struggled and was sent down to the minor leagues. Finally becoming a full time MLB starter once he was 24 years old in the 2019 season. He became an everyday player and for his career he has been fourteen percent above average hitter and this year he had been 34 percent above MLB average.
He fits into this Blue Jays team perfectly. He will probably be a designated hitter However he would nicely round out the Toronto outfield playing alongside George Springer and Kevin Kiermaier. If the Blue Jays hope to acquire a playoff spot they will need to get there within the next few seasons because of their aging veteran starters. They won’t be able to get the same amount of production from Kevin Kiermier, and George Springer.
Santander will probably have a secure spot in the lineup next to Bo Bichete and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Forming a three headed monster of a lineup with a good supporting cast of players to make a solid chance at the playoffs. This however might be one of their last chances to capitalize on their current talent.
The Orioles will probably be fine without Santander. They have a great young roster. In fact losing Santnader will most likely be a good thing because it opens up a lineup spot for another young star to get some playing time. Unfortunately he was a fan favorite for Orioles fans following the team closely. He is going to be a threat in their own division.
