Pete Alonso, one of the best players on the New York Mets, had his contract expire over the 2024 season. As of right now, it’s unknown where he will play for the 2025 season. During the playoffs he renewed his reputation with Mets fans after a disappointing regular season by his standards which means hitting 23% above the average hitter. He is the best option to keep at first base for the New York Mets.
In his first season, he hit an incredible 53 home runs which is the most ever by a player in their rookie year. He has only been beaten out by Aaron Judge, the current record holder for the most home runs in a season that didn’t later need to testify about steroid use.
But this year his contract expired for the Mets. He was offered a three year 70 million dollar deal for the Polar Bear. Which is actually kind of small for a player of his caliber. But it has happened before. A good example would be the Atlanta Braves who have locked up young talent on extremely team friendly deals. And Pete does think that he might want to stay in New York. He would form a deadly lineup with recent Mets acquisition Juan Soto. The relatively smaller deal is probably due to the fact that the Mets have the largest payroll in the league.
The Mets ownership have the deepest pockets in the league with the aforementioned Juan Soto getting a 700 million dollar deal. They can absolutely afford to spend a little more and lock up an intimidating lineup with a three headed monster of Soto, Lindor, and Alonso. Alonso is expected to stay with the Mets and he has expressed interest in it for most of the offseason. But wherever he goes he will be an undeniable threat.
