The Arizona Diamondbacks are going to the World Series after beating the Philadelphia Phillies in 7 games. The Diamondbacks started the series losing the first 2 games and watching their chance of playing in the World Series slowly slipping away. However, they bounced back by winning games 3 and 4. This tied the series with the critical game 5 being played in Arizona. The Diamondbacks would end up losing this game and were down 3 games to 2, with the series shifting back to Philadelphia for games 6 and 7. Teams that win game 5 of a series go on to win the series 82.8% of the time. This means that the Diamondback had a very low chance of advancing in the series, especially having to go back to Philadelphia, where the fans are loud the whole game and the Phillies always have a clear advantage when playing at home during the playoffs.
The Diamondbacks would win game 6 to force a winner take all game 7. The Diamondbacks would start fast with a quick 1st inning run scored by their young star Corbin Carroll. The Phillies answered back in the 2nd inning with a home run by Alec Bohm. The Phillies would take the lead in the 4th inning after an RBI double by Bryson Stott. The Diamondbacks would quickly answer back by taking the lead in the 5th inning, and never turned back, beating the Phillies 4-2 to return to the World Series for second time in franchise history.
This series win by the Diamondbacks shocked the world as the Phillies were the clear favorite to win the NLCS and advance to the World Series. This is Arizona’s first time back to the World Series after winning it in 2001. The World series begins Friday the 27th, where the Diamondbacks will visit the Texas Rangers with both teams having multiple days of rest. This series is special because both of these teams were among the worst teams last year, and now they’re playing to see who is the best team. A major part of their success this season is due to some great pitching, and young players making an instant impact on the team. They got phenomenal pitching from the young star, Zac Gallen, a 28 year old right handed pitcher out of Somerdale, New Jersey. He pitched in 34 regular season games, with a 17-9 record, a 3.47 ERA(earned run average) and 220 strikeouts. This led to him being the clear set ace on the Diamondbacks, and being the National League All-Star game starter. Another young player that has played a crucial role in their successful season is the rookie Corbin Carroll. He is a 23 year old outfielder out of Seattle, Washington. This season he hit .285 with 25 home runs, 76 RBI’s and 54 stolen bases. This led to him being an All-Star game starter for the National League, and almost a sure lock for Rookie of the year. Zac Gallen and Corbin Carroll are just a few of the players that were able to flip the script for the Diamondbacks, and become the National League champs.
