This past Sunday, the Washington Commanders took on the visiting Buffalo Bills. Before the game, the parking lot was full with a healthy mix of Commanders and Bills fans. As the hours passed and it got closer to game time, Bills fans flooded the parking lots with seas of blue. Rain continued off on and on as the PA system announcer called for fans to enter the stadium with one hour left until kickoff. Fans flocked to the stadium as anticipation for a hopefully great game was rising every second. In the stadium bowl, Bills fans crowded the visiting side of the stadium, creating a unique home atmosphere for their visiting team. The Bills would use this to their advantage throughout the game.
The Bills took control of the first quarter quickly starting with the opening kickoff, which would lead to an opening drive 36 yard field goal. The Commanders got the ball back hoping to strike back with a score. The Commanders led a good drive down the field getting to Buffalo’s 37 yard line. The next play, Sam Howell dropped back and threw an interception to Buffalo linebacker Terrel Bernard. Both teams traded punts on their next offensive possessions until Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen, unleashed a 35 yard strike to wide receiver Gabriel Davis making the score 10-0. The Commanders would continue to self-destruct on offense leading to another interception, which would give the Bills the opportunity to score two more field goals before the end of the first half leaving the score at 16-0.
Washington opened the second half with possession of the ball, hoping to cut into the large deficit. Sam Howell would be able to muster a decent drive by getting into the redzone. Looking to score, Howell threw a forced pass into the endzone, leading to another interception. Washington would show flashes of great play on defense with cornerback Kendall Fuller forcing an interception. Despite the help from the defense, the Washington offense continued to have difficulty against the Bills defense who forced a fumble. Josh Allen proceeded to use the short field to his advantage by running the ball in himself for the touchdown. Sam Howell put the nail in the coffin by throwing a pick- six making the score 30-0. The Bills were not satisfied however, as they got the ball back and scored another touchdown. Washington would get the ball back and proceeded to score their first points of the day with a field goal on the final play of the game.
The Bills walked away victorious, with a final score of 37-3.
