South Lakes High School will be offering a new class next year called Athletic Leadership. Mr Cincinnati, the teacher of the new class, says that the class is for “everyone who loves sports”. As a student, one will learn how to be successful in the sports industry without necessarily being an athlete.

Athletic Leadership will be something totally different than what has been seen before at South Lakes. Mr. Cincinnati stated, “We will learn about sports law, management, and coaching philosophies.” He also mentioned there will be lectures, taking notes and small writing assignments. “It will also be very hands-on, as we are an extension of the Activities Office,” he said. Students will be covering games, broadcasting on livestream and posting on social media.

Mr. Cincinnati got his start in sports working at college athletics as a student. “I love sports and  sports management, besides history, it’s one of my passions,” he said. Athletic and Activities director, Ms. Conte, has been trying to get this class in the county for a couple years and asked Mr. Cincinnati to teach the new class.

Sports management is such a growing industry and one of the most popular majors at universities. Mr. Cincinnati believes that students who want to be in sports should join Athletic Leadership as it shows that anyone can participate in sports without necessarily playing them. When asked why students should take this new class, Mr Cincinnati responded, saying, “This is a great avenue for students who cannot go play collegiate or professional sports.”

However there is an application for this class as applicants need two teacher recommendations. There are also questions about being a leader and how applicants envision athletics in general and at South Lakes. Finally, there will be an interview with some sports management directed questions. As of now Athletic Leadership is a one year class with hope to expand into a multiple years course.

Mr. Cincinnati ends his interview by stating that he hopes students are “ready to get hands on, post on social media, broadcast and work events.” Athletic Leadership will help all sorts of students become better at sports management, sports interviews, broadcasting, and more!
