Current Major League Baseball rankings
This season has been crazy, from last minute trades to superstars having season ending injuries, but through this, certain teams have shown their fortitude. The following teams have proven themselves as consistently dominant through all this adversity.
#10 Oakland Athletics
After a tough loss in the Wild Card game to end their season, the Oakland Athletics are again in the chase for the Wild Card, with the help of all-stars Matt Chapman and Liam Hendricks. With a 79-58 record, they are only one game behind the team in 1st place, making them apart of the Wild Card game against the Cleveland Indians or Tampa Bay Rays. Plus, with only 25 games left in the season, time is limited and the Athletics could use a nice September winning streak.
#9 Cleveland Indians
Cleveland contending for the Wild Card is only two wins away from the Tampa Bay Rays and leading the Athletics by one. Despite this, with starting pitcher Trevor Bauer being traded right before the deadline, and starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco just getting back on his feet after being diagnosed with leukemia, the team is struggling to hold on. Still, the fight doesn’t stop. The Indians are hoping to make the playoffs to redeem the notorious 2016 World Series loss to the Chicago Cubs.
#8 Chicago Cubs
As deceiving as it may be, the Cubs winning isn’t always a sign of a strong postseason. Injury has struck their all-star closer Craig Kimbrel, as well as their flashy middle infielder, Javier Baez. The Cubs are on pace to play the Nationals in the Wild Card game, and their only a few games back from the Cardinals in their own division. The Cubs are going to have to work hard to succeed in the postseason.
#7 St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals are currently leading the N.L. Central*, partially due to their current record of 21-6. With the Cubs right on their tails, they have to keep up the pace for the rest of September. The red birds are ready for another strong postseason, with the help of Pitcher of the Month, Jack Flaherty.
#6 Washington Nationals
When the Nationals are healthy, they are one of the most dangerous teams in the league. With a mix of young talent and experienced veterans, the Nationals are balanced up and down the lineup. This makes them almost unstoppable when they’re hot. As a new franchise, experience in the playoffs is limited and has been an issue in the past. However, if their starting pitchers are healthy and their lineup is hot, get ready for a fun October for baseball in Washington.
#5 Alanta Braves
The Braves may be the hottest team in baseball. They are on a seven game winning streak and they don’t show any sign of slowing down. Players Ronald Acuna Jr and Josh Donaldson have been amazing with their bats, and Max Fried and Mike Soroka have been Cy Young caliber pitchers on the mound.
#4 Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers have been the talk of baseball for the whole season, but are they slowing down? The team has a stacked lineup including MVP candidate Cody Bellinger and All-Star starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu. Although the regular season never seems to be an issue for the Dodgers, they’ve been to the World Series for the past two years and they lost both of them. With a young team the playoffs are unpredictable
#3 Minnesota Twins
Leading the league in home runs with 268, the Twins have arguably the strongest offense in the league. The only weakness would be their pitching staff, which would just be considered mediocre in comparison to their offense. Missing the playoffs last year was a wake up call for them, so get ready for an offense run postseason for Minnesota.
#2 Houston Astros
These 2017 World series champions are looking for another ring, and as one of the most well rounded teams in the league, finding their weaknesses is hard. With three Cy Young caliber pitchers on the mound and gold gloves and silver sluggers throughout the field, be careful when stepping between the lines with this team.
#1 New York Yankees
Coming in at the top of our list is the New York Yankees. With a solid starting pitching lineup and an offense run by Dj Lemahieu and Aaron Judge, this team has the best record in the league, and they have been solid all year. The only teams in the Yankees’ way are the Astros and Twins. After that, the pennant will be the Yankees, on course for their 28th ring.
