Winter conditions disrupting spring sports schedules
This winter’s heavy snow fall and below average temperatures have left spring sport teams desperate for a nice day to play outside.
Varsity and junior varsity baseball, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, and track have all experienced some form of rescheduling due to the cold weather. Most tryouts were held indoors during the week of Feb. 24.
Teams are forced to practice indoors at sporadic times and games are often rescheduled and canceled due to the weather.
“Over half of our practices this season have been indoors so we’ve been very limited on what we can do and how we can practice,” junior varsity baseball player, sophomore Tom Mallaney said.
Director of Student Activities, Linda Jones, moves around schedules in order to keep athletes out of the cold weather.
The constant new and melting layers of snow have left the playing fields in poor conditions.
“The fields are really wet from all the melted snow and it is really hard to run on,” girls varsity softball player freshman Natalie Pritz said. “I feel like we’re falling behind other schools because we haven’t had many outdoor practices.”
“It’s kind of ridiculous how much snow we’re getting this late in the year. I just want to get outside so we can play,” Mallaney said.
Temperatures have finally warmed up and teams are hopeful they will continue throughout the rest of the season.
