Boys volleyball makes the most of its third season
Boys volleyball club offers players of all levels of skill and experience opportunity to play competitively against other Northern Virginia High School teams.
Club sponsor Terrie Galanti created the boys volleyball program three years ago.
“We started the team in 2010 when my son Matthew was a freshman and when I started teaching at South Lakes,” Galanti said.
Galanti is proud of the character team members display on and off the court.
“Most of all, I love the diversity of our team and the wonderful spirit and sportsmanship that they show to each other and to other teams,” Galanti said.
Since its start, the team has grown substantially.
“Last year we only had about 10 or 12 people try out to play and actually be on the team, but this year during tryouts we had up to 17 or 18 people,” Kidane said. “It’s definitely growing and more people are showing interest. Last year we had our best record ever, and the year before that they had won like one game, so we’re definitely getting better.”
Boys volleyball is enjoying a winning season thus far.
“Our record is 4-1,” club sponsor Terrie Galanti said. “Most of our players have experience and our new players are eager to learn and making great contributions. “
The team has accomplished this despite a lack of funding from the county. Because boys volleyball is a club rather than a sanctioned sport, players have to pay fees for everything from equipment to referees.
Galanti is grateful for the support of the South Lakes community.
“We are very fortunate to have the support of Coach Hostetler, the girls’ varsity volleyball coach,” Galanti said. “She allows us to practice at the same time as her team. Ms. Jones, Coach Duggan, and the cheerleading sponsors are also very nice about sharing gym space with us. This club is such a wonderful example of the South Lakes community coming together.”
