Varsity girl’s soccer defeated Parkview 2-0 in their first scrimmage of the season on February 28.
Throughout the game, South Lakes had the defense on lockdown. During the first half of the game, South Lakes had the most possession of the ball with seven failed scoring opportunities.
Freshman Karen Reyes lead the second half scoring the first goal of the game from a breakaway. The second goal of the second half was scored by sophomore Molly McGrath when she one-touched the ball into the net past the goalie.
“I think that the scrimmage went as well as we could have wanted it to in terms of the final score but there’s a lot of work to be done,” Girls varsity coach Mike Astudillo said. “We have a long way to go, so this was a good first step, obviously, but it’s just a scrimmage and we have another one next week, so we’ll hopefully improve from this week to next week.”
Astudillo also thinks that this first scrimmage was a good way to prepare the younger students on the team for the rest of the season.
“I think that it was nice to get some experience for some of the kids that are freshmen, since there are a lot of young kids on the team.”
As a returning member of the team, Junior Diana Mazid thinks that the game was an excellent way to begin the season.
“I think that was one of the best games we have ever played at South Lakes and it shows that the organization is definitely growing,” Mazid said. “We could still use work on winning 50/50 balls and finished on corner kicks and crosses and finished on our opportunities though.”
The next scrimmage is against Champe on March 7.
