Both the girls and boys basketball squads are enjoying winning records as they approach district tournament season. The girls are 11-5 and the boys 10-6 as of Jan. 26.
Highlighting the boys season are claiming the Readers are Leaders Tournament and defeating rival Herndon 86-82 on Dec. 20. The boys had a seven-game winning streak snapped on Jan. 20, losing to McLean. The girls also have a tournament trophy, winning the West Springfield Tip Off. The girls also defeated Herndon, 66-53.
The boy’s team has been led by 5’11″ senior guard J.D. Wallace. Wallace averages 15.7 points per game and has had 26 three-point field goals this season.
This season, the varsity squad welcomed freshman Brandon Kagma, only the seventh freshman to make the varsity team in South Lakes history. A freshman on the varsity squad was unheard of since the days of Grant Hill until last year when Clayton O’ Neill was added to the team.
“This season has been really good,” said Wallace. “The team has worked really well together.”
And the boys are not alone in their success this season.
Girls varsity team has gone 11-5 as of Jan. 23.
The girls season has been highlighted by winning the West Springfield Tip Off Tournament and defeating Herndon, 66-53.
The girl’s team has been led by 6’4″ sophomore center/forward Abigail Rendle, who is averaging 10.1 points per game this season and also leads the team in rebounds.
“This season has been really great,” said Rendle. “We have improved so much from last year and I really think it has shown.”
The boys and girls play Marshall on Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. The boys are at home while the girls play on the road.
After the Marshall games, both teams have two additional games left before district play begins on Feb. 14.
