As early as next fall, South Lakes will have two new turf fields.
The projected fields will go in the stadium and on the field between South Lakes and Langston Hughes for an estimated cost of about two million dollars.
“Because the cost is so high, we have had a few partners support the cause,” said Principal Bruce Butler. “Fairfax County Park and Recreation decided to put in as long as we give them a few hours daily and many of the youth athletic programs want in on the project.”
Butler believes that the high cost of installing the turf fields will be worth it.
“The new fields will create up to 62% more athletic use time,” said Butler. “The turf fields will reduce the amount rain outs or mud outs.”
Athletic director Linda Jones hopes that this will increase student involvement in athletics.
“We hope these fields will increase athletic participation,” said Jones. “Teams will now have a facility that they can practice in through almost any weather.”
