This season, Brandon Kamga became the seventh freshman in South Lakes history to make the boys varsity basketball team.
Typically, varsity teams consist of junior and senior players, while junior varsity and freshman teams are reserved for underclassmen.
Underclassmen rarely make the 15-player roster, though this is the second consecutive year this has occured.
Kamga follows fellow teammate, sophomore Clayton O’Neill, along with former NBA player and Seahawk Grant Hill.
“I was really excited especially because I was the only freshman on the team,” said Kamga.
Fellow teammates see much potential in Kamga.
“Brandon works really hard in practice and it seems to be paying off,” said senior guard and teammate JD Wallace. “He is definitely an asset to the team and I know he’s going to do well this season.”
Kamga played in the first two games this season, in which the Seahawks defeated Centerville 68-50 and Oakton 63-52.
“My first two games have been nerve racking,” said Kamga. “I believe I’ve done well in my first two games but the competition level is so much different.”
Kamga wants to prove that he deserves his place on the roster. Currently, he feels the primarily upperclassmen team accepts him given his youth.
“It’s an honor to be on the team and I feel accepted even though I’m a freshman,” said Kamga.
Kamga hopes to contribute his talents to the team and generate a winning season.
“My goal is just to get better and help my team achieve greatness,” said Kamga.
Kamga has high anticipation for a future basketball career.
“I hope that one day I will be playing for UConn.”
In his first four games, Kamga averages 8.75 points per game. He has also hit 9-10 free throws and has scored two, 3-point shots.
Varsity basketball has a 2-2 record going into tonight’s home game against Langley. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
