The varsity indoor track and field team traveled to Robinson Secondary School Dec. 4 for their meet of the season. Despite the cold weather, several athletes qualified for regional and state competitions.
Junior Rashaan Jones competed in high jump and won the meet with a 6’6.25” jump. The jump qualified Jones for states and set a school high jump record.
Sophomore Aya Abdelhalim, defending Libery District 55-meter hurdler champion, won her race with a regional qualifying time.
The boys 4×200 meter relay also qualified for the regional championship.
“Our season is looking pretty bright for both the boys and girls this year,” said senior Naimah Coleman. “a lot of our athletes are already qualifying and it’s our first meet. I am excited because many of us are exceeding our last year’s times and marks already and championship season is still about two months away. We just got to keep working hard and we hope to see a first place trophy for both guys and girls this season.”
The team will compete in two meets before Winter Break, the first at Thomas Jefferson Middle School on Dec. 9, and the annual PR Invitational at PG Sportsplex on Dec. 17.
