For senior Sumiya Yates, track and field has broadened her college options.
Do you have a daily after school commitment?
After school I go to track practice to work on my shot put and discus, which are called “throws” in track and field. I’ve been throwing since outdoor track sophomore year, and I’ve done indoor and outdoor ever since.
How did you get interested in track and field?
My friend [senior] Jasmine Colon told me about it. I decided to stop playing basketball and I took up throwing.
How did you do last season?
I did better than expected. I ranked 20th in the state of Virginia for the shot put, but there’s much room for improvement.
How have you trained to do better this season?
Over the summer I lifted to keep up my strength and I will continue to work hard over the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Which event do you enjoy doing most?
I love shot put and discus, but I would say that shot put is more exciting for me.
Do you plan on continuing after you graduate from South Lakes?
A couple colleges like Mary Washington and Christopher Newport have contacted me and they’re interested in me throwing for them next year. I am looking forward to the many opportunities the sport offers and I’m thinking about going to either Christopher Newport or Morgan State University.
