Opening week is one of the most interesting weeks of the whole season in any professional sport and this past week in the NFL was no exception.
Both hometown teams, the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Redskins, collided with their longtime division rivals the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Ravens played their star quarterback Joe Flacco and Rex Grossman started over John Beck for the ‘Skins.
Baltimore received the opening kickoff at 1:00 while the Redskins received at 4:15.
Baltimore conquered the first quarter, covering 128 yards and scoring two touchdowns. Though the Redskins received, they started the first quarter only covering four yards in their first two drives.
Joe Flacco went 17-29, throwing for 224 yards and three touchdowns. Rex Grossman completed 21 passes out of 34 attempts, with 305 yards and two touchdowns.
The Redskins intercepted a pass from Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning for a touchdown and blocked a field goal. The Ravens forced a team record seven turnovers as their dominating defense came up big.
The Ravens avenged their last season’s playoff loss to the Steelers with a 35-7 win while the Redskins defeated the Giants 28-14.
The Baltimore Ravens moved up in the ESPN weekly power rankings from eighth to fourth and the Washington Redskins moved up from 28 to 19 as both teams look to be threatening forces this NFL season.
