The track and field team closed out their season at the State Championship in Richmond this past weekend with three athletes earning All-State Honors.
Senior Sean Price placed second in the triple jump, breaking both personal and school records. Sophomore Rashaan Jones placed third in the high jump with a personal best and fellow sophomore Kyannah Calhoun placed eighth in the 800-meter run, setting a new personal record.
Both the boys and girls enjoyed successful starts to post-season competition when both teams won the Liberty District title, a first for South Lakes.
For the Northern Region Championship on May 27, the team took 16 competitors, seven boys and nine girls.
The boys track and field team placed second while the girls placed ninth, the highest they have placed in seven years.
Though previously winning three straight outdoor titles, the boys went into the meet trailing 25 points from the lead and came close to an upset victory, but didn’t get the points needed in the final match.
“At regions, we lost our focus,” said Jones, who also clinched third place in both high jump and triple jump. “It just could’ve been a bad day for some people, but not everybody.”
Leading the team in personal achievements was Price. Price won the long jump, triple jump, 100-meter dash, and 200-meter dash. Price placed second in the high jump. In the 100-meters, Price set a personal best.
Junior Armando Drain was the runner-up in the 300-meter hurdles, breaking the school record for the event in the process. Drain also finished fourth in the 110-meters hurdles.
“I’m really proud of our team this season,” said sophomore 4×400 relay runner Haley Vaughn. “I’m especially proud of our girls, we’ve all worked so hard this season and can’t wait until next year.”
