Agent 47, the only agent who doesn’t fail his mission. Ever.
He’s the quintessential hitman hired for the job, out of the 48 experiments made and cloned. Hitman is a franchise like no other, where each action has to be precise, deliberate, and coordinated.
The Hitman series follows a chronological storyline derived from video-game serialization.
When assigned missions, Agent 47 cannot cause a commotion and worry the masses. As a result, he is very calculated, and every action the player takes has to be taken seriously. 47 cannot go around shooting obvious distractions in his way, and his moves must remain stealthy, mysterious, and in a furtive manner.
Agent 47 is assigned missions from his organization, the International Contract Agency (ICA), and he cannot go off-duty. What makes Agent 47 such a fascinating character in video-games is the fact that he is designed to be morally ambiguous, and doesn’t have a programmed ethical compass. Compared to other protagonists, 47 does not hold back.
What also distinguishes Agent 47 from other assassin clones is the barcode at the back of his head. Albeit, the developers have disclosed that this is a cosmetic tattoo for the player to admire. Although, it is used to identify 47 and track his movements. His barcode tattoo allows him to enter into his facility where he was created and trained.

His design had also gone through multiple re-designs before they nailed finalization. Compared to the other clones, 47 proves to be competent at his job, and wealthy criminals invested in him. He is a bioengineered clone made with the intensive study of gene augmentation and carries DNA from outlaw masterminds around the world.
The motivation for the clones that precede him was the ultimate goal to delineate a strong, proficient assassin base ready for deployment. In turn, Agent 47 was perfect.
Every installment that Agent 47 engages in, is a new chapter into the story, where he uncovers various events and eliminates his targets. He is known for his monotone demeanor, and efficient, ruthless methodologies. Dr. Ort-Meyer is the mad scientist behind 47, and intended for each clone to obey and dispose of targets. He wanted his discoveries to be made public and aspired for the recognition it’d bring him in his field.
Hitman lore aside, 47’s actions do matter, and it’s not just the targets he affects, but the victims too. It’s like a puzzle game where players must brainstorm ways to eliminate targets within the sandbox environment. Once the player has eliminated their designated targets, respective to the mission, Agent 47 profits from completing his contract.
The consequences of Agent 47’s actions extend beyond the immediate elimination of his targets. Each successful mission sets off a chain reaction, impacting the lives of those connected to his targets, often resulting in shifts in power dynamics and unforeseen collateral damage. Additionally, the organizations that hire him might gain an advantage or destabilize regions, unveiling the broader ethical implications of his undertakings.
Agent 47 frequently encounters moral quandaries as he navigates his assignments, wrestling with the implications of his actions on innocent lives. Despite being designed for precision and efficiency, moments of hesitation arise when his missions intersect with the lives of bystanders or when his targets are not as villainous as they seem.
In the end, the Hitman franchise masterfully intertwines thrilling gameplay with profound ethical exploration. Hitman portrays Agent 47 as a complex anti-hero who embodies the duality of precision and morality, leaving players to ponder the true essence of free will and the cost of obedience in a world driven by hidden agendas.
